The Crawford County Road Commission would like to inform local residents about the impacts of the statewide labor dispute between the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA) and the International Union of Operating Engineers (OE) #324, which is now making news across Michigan. Many construction projects were halted across the state before Labor Day and did not resume as expected on Tuesday, September 4,. Crawford County has some projects that are stalled because of this dispute.
This is not a local dispute involving the County Road Commission, nor does the Road Commission have control over any portion of the process. It is a statewide issue and no one is certain how long it will continue. Perhaps projects will be completed into October and November, or may even stretch into 2019-impacting the 2019 work schedule.
The following is a list of the Crawford County Road Commission projects currently impacted:
Wakeley Bridge Road, will be postponed and re-bid in 2019.
County Road 502 from the South County line to Hunter Lake Road.
South Grayling Road paving, the culvert replacement in Beaver Creek will continue and shall be completed by Road Commission personnel.
Four Mile Road
Roberts Road and Sherwood Forest in Grayling Township
Dewitt and High Road in South Branch Township
The Transfer Site Road in Beaver Creek Township
We stand optimistic that the projects will be completed yet this season, however each day gets us closer to the inevitable. In the event the paving is not done this fall, the Road Commission will prepare the gravel grades so that it will be maintainable for winter traffic. We will do our best to maintain them until they can be completed.
We apologize for any inconvenience this will cause, we hope road building unions and contractors meet and find a way to resolve their differences quickly before any projects are significantly delayed any further.
